Doncaster Streetlight Replacement

A big thank you to all those involved in the DMBC / One3One Smart Light Project.

Approximately 45 thousand streetlights are being recycled via CH Middleton Ltd’s services through our network of local South Yorkshire suppliers. All stripped metals from this project were sold to local scrap yards and processed in UK foundries; All Plastics and Fibreglass went to Yorkshire suppliers for processing; Electricals such as Light Sensors were sorted and processed in South Yorkshire and ALL residues kept within the UK.

CH Middleton Ltd  was asked to deliver a zero cost zero to landfill project. Although initially thought to be none viable, after careful consultation and planning with key suppliers a solution was presented.

The project yielded many results for Doncaster Council and its stakeholders:

  • The new lights will be more energy efficient and cheaper to run. They are designed to last for 100,000 hours, which is the equivalent to 25 years. In comparison, the existing lights last around six years before they need to be replaced.
  • The investment will pay for itself in 6 years, after which a benefit from a saving of £1.3m per year compared to the costs of running the current streetlights. This means Doncasters street lighting energy bill will be reduced by 70%.
  • As well as making savings of £1.3m per year, Doncaster Council will reduce its carbon footprint by 80% or 4,700 tonnes.
  • Over 90% of the waste was recycled (in the UK).

Such was the success of the project delivery, design and results that the project attracted nominations for (and won) several awards.
